"The remaining pages of “The True History of Lobster Johnson” traces the reception, adaptations and transformations that Cooper’s based on true stories character later went through. It holds a funhouse mirror to what I’ve described earlier while simultaneously addressing the sometimes tragic circumstances of the pulp and comic book pioneers. Archie Comics turning The Shadow into a blond spandex guy gets a well deserved lashing and the increasingly weird film adaptations culminating/reaching their nadir in Mexican films like Lobster Johnson y la Máscara de la Muerte are discussed. A continuation of this is found in “Latchkey Memories From Crab Point”, written by artist Guy Davis and published in the trade paperback B.P.R.D.: The Black Goddess (Oct, 2009). Furthering the intertextual play Davis recounts childhood memories of seeing movies featuring a crime fighting wrestler. The character he describes later shows up drinking with Big Red in “Hellboy Gets Married Part One” (Dark Horse Presents #31, Vol. Two #188, Dec, 2013). And so the tapestry keeps getting new patterns.
