From a Certain Point of View
I have been asked to write a Last Jedi text, talking about the new trailer that was released last night. There’s just one problem: I won’t watch it.
Last month director of the film Ryan Johnson took to twitter to urge people to avoid any more film details until September and this was later supported by Mark Hamill who encourage people to listen to Jonson.
We may have a similar situation to that of Batman v Superman and their horrible trailer that literally revealed everything in the plot and this may be some of the creative fore behind the film more or less warning people of this new trailer. Trailers are always made by a separate division of a studio, a marketing division who have no creative input but instead focus on buzz scenes to get people interested in their films. This often leads to major plot points being revealed in trailers and spoiling the film to keen eyed viewers.
As I woke up early this morning and booked my showings for December 13th I was fully aware there was a new trailer, but I knew I wouldn’t watch it. As I arrived at work I was informed I had to write the text about it and a few co-workers tell me it’s a bit spoilery so I’ve made the conscious decision to avoid it at all costs.
The Force Awakens was in part a mystery and a mcguffin for Luke Skywalker. The slow unveiling of the curtain that Johnson seems to be working towards could be delicately balanced enough that some goof cutting a trailer might not understand. So watch the trailer, if you dare.
May the Force be with you.
