Issue 23 collects together the first three serials to feature Peter Davison's incarnation of the Time Lord (a Doctor who always ranks very highly at the DWC), so it's a joy to find out more about the making of his early adventures in time and space, namely:
Castrovalva.
The Doctor's regeneration is failing. Narrowly escaping death at the hands of the Master, the time travellers take refuge in Castrovalva, where not all is as it seems. A dark plan could end the Fifth Doctor's life before it has begun.
Four to Doomsday
Aboard a vast starship en route to Earth, the Doctor encounters the grog-like Urbankans and their leader, Monarch. The ship's passengers are drawn from different Earth cultures - but what secret do they possess, and what is Monarch's true purpose?
Kinda
On the paradise world of Deva Loka, evil lurks in the dark places of the inside. While the Doctor and Adric are prisoners of a survey team, Tegan faces the sinister Mara in the nightmare world - a nightmare that's about to become terrifying reality. Even though Castrovalva was the first story broadcast to star Davison, he actually filmed Four to Doomsday first and it's amazing to see how he immediately captured the spirit of the Doctor and defined his incarnation. He's an astonishingly strong actor, and while they're far from perfect, I do really like these three serials (well, Castrovalva less than the other two, but my point still stands).
Kinda is great, but maybe not for newbies. For any viewers who'd never seen Who before, can you imagine what impression Kinda would leave them with?!
Ah, and Four to Doomsday. Questionable science, but I love it. Monarch, Persuasion, and Enlightenment are wonderfully strange, as is the whole situation really. Yep, these three stories are a very good start for the Fifth Doctor.
